People have been seeing strange things in the sky for a long time. Some sightings are just lights or shapes that move in weird ways. But sometimes, the encounters get a lot closer—and a lot stranger. That’s where the idea of “close encounters” comes in.
The term was first used by Dr. J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer who worked with the U.S. Air Force investigating UFOs back in the day. At first, he didn’t believe in any of it. But over time, he started to take the reports more seriously, especially the ones that couldn’t be explained away. To keep things organized, he came up with a system to categorize how close someone actually gets to a UFO.
Let’s go over what each type means.
First Kind – You See It
This is when you see a UFO up close—less than 500 feet away. No interaction, no sound, nothing changes around you. You just see it.
Example: A disc-shaped object floating silently in the sky above your car, maybe with some lights, but that’s it.
Second Kind – It Affects the Environment
Now it’s not just something you see—it has an effect. That could be your car stalling, radio interference, scorch marks on the ground, or animals reacting strangely.
Example: Your car dies right when a glowing object passes overhead. Once it’s gone, the engine works fine again.
Third Kind – You See Beings
This is when people report seeing occupants—beings near or inside the craft. They might be humanoid, robotic, or just… different. Sometimes there’s communication, sometimes not.
Example: You see small figures walking around a landed craft, maybe collecting soil or looking at you before leaving.
Beyond the Third Kind
Later on, people added more types:
- Fourth Kind: Abduction. You’re taken by the beings—sometimes there’s missing time or strange memories afterward.
- Fifth Kind: You make contact on purpose. You try to reach out, and something responds.
- Sixth Kind: Someone gets hurt—or worse—from an encounter.
- Seventh Kind: Claims of human-alien hybrids. This one’s way out there, but some people believe it.
Not everyone agrees with these extra categories, but they come up a lot in UFO discussions.
Are These Really New?
What’s interesting is that these stories aren’t just modern. If you look at old writings, legends, and cave art from around the world, there are strange accounts of beings from the sky or “gods” arriving in bright flying objects. Whether that’s ancient aliens or just stories from the past, it makes you think.
So… What’s Going On?
Are people really seeing something out there? Are we dealing with advanced tech, visitors from another planet, or something else entirely? I don’t claim to know, but the number of reports and patterns are hard to ignore.
Close encounters give us a way to talk about these events clearly. Whether you believe in aliens or not, the stories keep coming—and some of them are hard to explain away.
